The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) has partnered with the Food System Resilience Programme (FSRP) to enhance productivity in Ghana’s agricultural sector.
This initiative is part of the World Bank-funded project aimed at strengthening food systems and boosting agricultural productivity across West Africa.
Speaking at the 5th wrap-up meeting of the FSRP on Tuesday, March 4, the Chief Technical Advisor for (MoFA), Kwasi Etu Bonde, emphasised the importance of transitioning Ghana to irrigation-based agriculture.
He highlighted that this shift would enable year-round farming and encourage youth participation in the sector.
“On the issue of food security, our agriculture is about 1.6% irrigated. Only about 30,000 hectares of our irrigable land is under irrigation.
“So, if these initiatives come on board and we move from rain-fed agriculture to irrigation-based agriculture, where farmers can cultivate all year round, I think that will ensure food security in the country,” he stated.
